Through victory or defeat, the heart of a fighter will shine through. An interview with Brett McDermott.

—As you prepare to make your Rizin debut, how is your mental state going into the fight?
To be honest, I am both nervous and excited. It’s such an honor to have been selected by BAMMA, and I want to show everyone how well I can fight. My motto is that I will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime, in any place, and that’s why I have come to Tokyo. I am ecstatic to have the chance to perform on such a big stage.
—And how is your current condition?
I feel good, but my preparation for this fight has been shorter than usual. However, my family is in the coal delivery and chimney cleaning business, so through that job, I have been able to work out hard, keeping my body in great condition.
—Please tell us your thoughts on your opponent, King Mo?
He’s a world class fighter. He’s not only a great wrestler, but his stand up game is excellent. He’s one of the favorites to win the tournament, and rightly so as he’s one of the top fighters today.
—And could you tell us your opinion on Japanese MMA?
I have seen some Japanese MMA online, but the thing that stands out are the Japanese fans. They are amazing.
—What kind of fight do you want to show the Japanese fans?
I want to show them that I have the spirit, the passion, and the heart and will to win. I realize I am going into the fight as the underdog, but I’m going to leave it all in the ring when I fight and do whatever it takes to win.
—Do you have anything you’d like to say to the fans?
It’s such an honor to be in this tournament, and I am going to prove my value as a worthy competitor.
