“This time I am confident” – An interview with Taro Akebono

—How is your current condition?
My conditioning is great. I’m getting more and more excited, and I feel great.
—What kind of practice did you do?
I slept, I ate, then I slept some more (LOL!). I trained very hard for this, and my preparation for this fight was much better than in previous fights. I didn’t train for “shoot boxing”, I trained to fight Bob Sapp.
—How do you think this will be different from other fights you’ve had in the past?
I know in my heart what is different, but if I tell you now and I don’t produce the goods, it’ll be the same as last time. So I’d rather you watched and decided for yourself.
—In pro wrestling, you work your way up to full pace as the matches go on. Are you at your peak right now?
Even in pro wrestling, my first match of the season was a title match, and I had quite a few of those so I am quite used to this pace. It’s make or break now.
—Are you confident?
This time I am. I had plenty of time to train and I understand the rules fully, as well as the fight itself.
—Do you think you’ll be using pro wrestling moves in this fight?
I think some, yes. Last time when I fought, when things got difficult, I forced him to the corner and my body had a mind of its own. That’s why I am confident that when I get tired, my body will take over naturally. I’ve been in pro wrestling for 10 years now, and if I am no good, I think that will show.
—Nobuhiko Takada has said that if you win this and take your record to 1-1 against Bob, then there should be a third and deciding match. What do you think about that?
I am happy that he said that of course, but all I am thinking about now is this fight. I really want to win, I have to win.
